Our Rooftop Garden

Humble beginnings

Humble beginnings

As the summer months come to an end and we enter our third month of operations, we thought we'd share a little information about our rooftop garden.

In our eyes, the garden has been a huge success. Our garden, sitting just 15 feet above the heads of our guests eating in our restaurant, has provided a huge amount of produce.

So far this summer we've grown purple and green beans, snow peas, basil, mint, tomatoes, zucchini, beets, chard, radishes, salad greens and, of course, oats and buckwheat.

Here are 6 reasons why we love our garden:

  1. Energy efficiency - it provides insulation which helps us to keep the building in the summer and warm in winter

  2. It absorbs water (both rain and snowmelt) and therefore diverts runoff from the sewers

  3. The garden provides a friendly habitat as well as food for pollinators in the city

  4. All of the produce that is gathered goes straight into the kitchen to be used on our menu

  5. Educational. We encourage our guests to ask their servers for a tour of the rooftop so that they can experience it for themselves

  6. Our garden provides a model and inspiration for other urban agricultural projects in Toronto
